Crossbar
Reducing Violence and Raising the Bar of Education - Football and Futures
Crossbar is an award-winning football-led education programme for people in prison who have often been excluded from learning. It uses the shared language of the game to create a route back into education, achievement and a different relationship with themselves and others. Crossbar has been co-designed specifically for learners who have disengaged from conventional classroom education.
There are no classrooms, essays or written tests. Learning happens through movement, visual tools, conversation and football-based challenges. Participants gain accredited qualifications while developing the practical habits that matter on and off the pitch: communication, responsibility, teamwork and decision-making.
At its core, Crossbar makes space for reflection without making it feel like school. Through the rhythms of training and play, participants learn to notice emotional triggers, regulate responses, exercise agency and manage conflict. In doing so, the programme helps reduce violence inside prison while building skills, confidence and possibility for life beyond it.
