Aux is an award-winning arts and music magazine created by and with people in prison. Developed through InHouse Records, it brings together writing, design, music, wellbeing and culture to offer creative connection and purposeful learning where it is most needed.

Initially produced during the isolation of lockdown, Aux became a vital weekly point of contact for people spending long periods confined to their cells. What appears to be a full-colour cultural magazine is also a form of “education by disguise”: an accessible invitation to read, reflect, write and learn through subjects that matter to its readers.

Created with contributions from people across the prison estate and InHouse graduates, Aux supports literacy, self-expression and confidence without reproducing the pressures of a conventional classroom. InHouse’s wider work, including Aux, has been associated with increased literacy and reduced negative behaviour among participants.

The magazine has reached readers across prisons in the UK and USA. During the first year of the pandemic it was delivered free to more than half of UK prisons, and more than 70,000 copies have since been distributed. Aux has received international recognition, including an iF Design Award, for using editorial design and culture to make learning more engaging, dignified and available to people in prison.
